We wanted it to sound like the last song on the Titanic that the band played before the ship sank.

What inspired you to write this song?

It came from a really dark time in my life when I was getting up at 4:00 a.m. to work in a factory, cutting my hands to shreds on big machinery. I wrote song titles on scraps of paper and kept some themes running that I wanted the album to follow. The metaphor of a sinking boat just seemed really appropriate at the time. As soon as I got the opening line, “Tell me again exactly how we get ourselves out of this one,” the whole album flooded in.

Non-music skills you need to survive as a musician:

Balls of steel. It's important to build up a second skin, because criticism is hard to swallow when you've given your all and someone swans up to you and says, “Yeah, its okay.” If you get back up after each knock, then you have what it takes.

Best thing about being in a band:

Touring is amazing. Just being together with a bunch of people who are friends first and musicians second means a lot. We're always able to lift each other and have a laugh when we need to — so when the music gets made, it gets made with real heart.
