What inspired you to write your favorite song?
My favorite is probably "Break Yourself." I was in a very emotional state when I recorded most of it, and when I listen to it now, it still jettisons me right back to that fucked-up period. It was about the tragic fall of a very good friend of mine.
What have you learned about the music business?
It sucks. It's filled with phonies. And no one ever gets back to you or gives you the courtesy of a response even if it's a "no thank you." You have to really, REALLY believe in what you're doing and persevere. When I realized I wanted to go to NYC and start my first band, I sent my homemade college-bedroom tape demo to these big-time managers. They never called me back, but I surprised them by sending my demo, again, on top of a Zabar's deli platter which I had delivered to their office. They called me while munching on the bagels & lox I sent, and proceeded to ask me what my major was. I answered "English...I'm getting a BA in English...why?" They said because they didn't hear one ounce of potential in my voice, my songwriting, or my production — not one positive attribute — that would give them any reason to encourage me to pursue my dream of being a singer. They suggested I become a teacher instead. I was crushed for months, and even my parents supported their advice, saying, "Well, if professionals are telling you that, honey, maybe they know what they're talking about." I learned that day that people don't know shit but are willing to talk as if they do. I have never since declared anyone a lost cause — I say if you want it enough and are willing to go for it, you might make it happen. I'm always being positive with new bands.
What non-music skills do musicians need?
Street smarts, common sense, a bit of business instinct, and a load of self-confidence (but in a humble sort of way).
What’s the best thing about being in a band?
Sharing something special and at times euphoric with people you love.
What’s your current favorite musical instrument?
My melodica. I can pick it up and the first sounds that come out often triggers a new song from me. I'll then drop it and grab my guitar and write something. The melodica is a pretty reliable catalyst for new songs. It also never fails to sound good on anything I record...and it always sounds sad.
