We don't have roles as such in the band, and we both end up playing a bit of everything. We basically pass songs between us and add what we each think it needs until we feel it's complete. We often work alone within this process, and then get together in the studio at certain points to consolidate the tracks. It's a constant process of layering and rethinking. Something like long-distance collaborative architecture. We both eagerly wait to see what the other has added to a track or how they've extruded the beginnings of something into a song.

What have you learned about the music business?

I partly manage and own the label that Glassacre releases through, so I have learned too much already. It's actually really nice having that balance of being inside and outside a label at the same time, as both experiences feed into and help inform one another.

In terms of making music, at the most basic level you really need to love your own music and be excited by it. If that's not happening then you have to ask yourself some serious questions. So much good music slips between genres and styles and doesn't get constrained by fashion — it's the captain of its own vessel. The biggest thing beyond that is to get your music out there any way you can, and keep pushing until it starts to stick. There are so many opportunities and channels available nowadays to get your music heard, and you need to use them all. Publish or die!

What non-music skills do musicians need?

Excellent penmanship, good hair, and the ability to handle a yacht on a high sea.

Best thing about being in a band:

This may sound a little obvious, but it's the music, the songs. We make music that we want to listen to. Listening to the final master of a new track, getting lost in it and forgetting you had a hand in its creation is magic. Everything beyond that is a bonus.
