What have you learned about the music business?
That once you make your music, how people perceive and choose to judge you
is out of your hands. The industry doesn't give a shit about substance
without sales. It's cutthroat and you can't depend on anyone to make things
happen for you.
What kinds of non-music skills do musicians need?
Your musical skills are secondary to your knowledge of the business. Sure,
you can be technically or artistically talented, but you have to know your
market and make sure your ass is covered in all areas of this bullshit
industry.
What's the best thing about being in a band?
Writing and recording. This is why I started doing this. The satisfaction of
creatively expressing
yourself is priceless.
Current favorite instruments or equipment:
My '74 Gretsch and my '69 Gibson hollowbody guitars. They are my pride and
joy. To me it's like owning a Cadillac and a Rolls Royce.
The real-world answer: Well, actually it's almost like the first answer, but without the "We'll never ever have to work for a living" bit. Oh, and maybe without the "complete personal fulfillment" bit either…that's much better achieved with beer.
