The Capitol Years

True tales of gigs gone strange...

Capitol Years

We drove into Tucson a couple of years ago and didn't have a show, so we tried to set one up out of thin air, which we were actually able to do. We asked a couple of people on the street, and ended up at this bar called the Meet Rack.

This Meet Rack is apparently a vile college bar (we were there during Spring Break, so few people were around) with lots of underwear hanging from the ceiling and a back room that’s more or less a sex dungeon. The owner goes by the name "God" (I think he may have legally changed his name); at the time, he was away in NYC taping an appearance on People's Court in which he was being sued for branding a college girl. God has also appeared as an extra in many Hollywood films, so there were lots of photos of him on the wall in scenes with Kirk Douglas and Telly Savalas.

We convinced God's daughter (managing for the night in his absence) to let us play there. We set up pretty bare-bones, with a low-volume setup: a lap steel, some drums, and guitars. A few people seemed to enjoy it. We ended up performing Bowie's "Space Oddity" with one of the bartenders and had the bar singing along to the chorus. Some journeyman left a bag of weed in Jeff's pedal case, and we found a place to stay that night.

For some reason, God's daughter was crying at the end of the night — probably out of fear that God would find out about all this (we were the first band ever to ever there...maybe the last.) It was memorable. Strange place…never been back.
