The weirdest gig, I guess, would have to be one we played in the
French Alps back in '99 or so. It was a nightmare to begin
with – our booking agent had planned some sort of
"weekend vacation" in the middle of our tour. I had the
flu and was on the brink of death.
We were asked to play in the lounge one evening,
but no one at the venue knew our music. Maybe they had come
hoping for a fun evening of dancing to cover songs?
Anyway, when we attempted to perform, we killed the good-times vibe in the room,
which prompted us to start playing Elvis and Neil Diamond
covers to make everyone happy. It didn't work, and
just when we were about to give up (for everybody's sake), a
father brought his 7-year-old kid up, who told us his name
was Aurelian and he could play drums.
We got rid of our drummer, Wayne – much to his relief – and
started jamming with this kid. He was pretty good – he even
kept up with my ZZTop and Bo Diddley blues jams!
Everyone got off on it, and at the end of the weekend
Aurelian gave us all big hugs and said goodbye, telling us he would miss us. I guess we made
a fan after all.
