Our strangest show was from before Communiqué, when four of us were in a punk band [American Steel]. We'd just gotten off one of our first tours, which meant we were basically playing in tool sheds and on the floors of dive bars. But while we were on the road, we were offered a show at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. For those who don't know the venue, it has a capacity close to 10,000 it's where people like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan play when they come through town.
The problem was, we had no sense yet of how to be performers so the announcer did this loud, high-energy introduction for us, and the crowd roared, and then we wandered onstage and started tuning our guitars. I don't think we'd even written a set list, so we kind of huddled around and figured out what to start with. It felt like several days before we actually started playing. After we settled in and got through a few songs, it ended up being a fun show, and by the end we'd gotten a lot more into working the crowd. I think that was the day we realized that even if you have an informal, straightforward approach to crowd interaction, you still need to bring enough presence to carry the show.
