Best make-out music

November 6 - November 12

The best make-out albums sweep you up and carry you off to another place, away from the distractions of the everyday world. They don't startle you with sudden shifts in mood or tempo, but create a luxurious cushion of sound so you can focus on, well, other things.

Elise Malmberg

American Analog Set, "Choir Vandals"
American Analog Set is pleasing to the ear, calming to the soul, and still has as much energy as my favorite punk albums Cliff Skolnick

Natacha Atlas, "Mon Amie la Rose"
Belgian-born international sexpot Atlas is equally seductive in Arabic, French, Spanish, and English. North African-infused electronica mixed with inspired, oddball covers — like Françoise Hardy's 1964 hit "Mon Amie la Rose." It's on right now. Can you come back in, like, 45 minutes? Joe Gore

from Gedida (1999, Mantra)

Bliss, "Song for Olabi"
This isn't the drunken-stumble-to-the-back-of-the-bar, throw-each-other-up-against-the-wall type of make-out music, but rather, music to set the stage for a long, slow night of sensual exploration. Merin McDonell

Laika, "If You Miss"
Margaret Fiedler and Guy Fixsen create a dense, polyrhythmic cascade of electronic and organic elements. Listening to this album is like standing under a waterfall of sound. Percussive, hypnotic, and magical. Elise Malmberg

Liz Martin, "Bitter Moon"
Post-coital jazz vocals drizzled over downtempo beats, with a dash of alt-country twang. Annette Loudon

Massive Attack, "Teardrop"
What can I say? It's hot. Rachel Frothingham

A boy I was good friends with gave me this album and played the song "Teardrop" for me. We sat there, looking at each other and uncomfortably listening to it, knowing it was a make-out song. Years later, he admitted he wanted to kiss me but was too scared. This is not about making out, but nearly making out...about anticipating a kiss that never happened. Julie Schuchard

Mazzy Star, "Fade Into You"
Ten years ago this might have been a cliché, and sure, "Fade Into You" was about as mainstream as you could get at the time, in terms of a dreamy make-out song to plug into a teen drama. But sometimes time is kind instead of cruel, and all of So Tonight That I Might See is still a great make-out album from beginning to end (as every good make-out album must be). Very easy to just hit "play" again when the first hot 45 minutes are up. Andrew Rose

Paul & Price, "When The Pushing Starts"
Downtempo groove yum with deep bass, sin-sational sax, and a breathy vocal that punctuates ever so slightly. With a song title like that, what more needs to be said? Dana Jae

Regina Spektor, "Hotel Song"
I like listening to artists with a thick, layered sound, and female lead singers with a dynamic, creative vocal style, like Bjõrk, Portishead, and Regina Spektor on her latest album, Begin to Hope. Her voice is orgasmic — it's like a threesome! Dave Llopis
