Elise Nordling's SXSW advance picks

February 26 - March 4

As SXSW (Wednesday March 14 - Sunday March 18) gets closer, I've been hitting www.sxsw.com more and more frequently to check out the bands on the schedule I've never heard of before, especially those coming from far away. Here are some of the really interesting-looking ones.

Emma Pollock, "Fortune" Demo
Formerly of much-missed Glaswegian band the Delgados, Emma proves she's still got it with this solo project. She'll be playing on Wednesday night at Emo's Main Room with Blonde Redhead and Beirut.

Loney, Dear, "I Am John"
This Swedish singer-songwriter crafts catchy, fun pop songs that kinda remind me of Tahiti 80 at times. He'll be playing the Sub Pop showcase on Wednesday night at Emo's IV Lounge with Oxford Collapse and Kinski.

Popup, "Chinese Burn"
Another band from Glasgow, but these boys are more Franz Ferdinand than Belle & Sebastian. There will definitely be dancing at their show on Wednesday night at the Whisky Bar, where they'll play with Deadman and George Byrne.
