Elise Nordling's Noise Pop Festival Standouts

March 5 - March 11

As I write this, the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco is in full swing. Since I also work for Noise Pop, I've been running from venue to venue and catching a bunch of amazing artists I'd never heard before, and some I've been fans of for years. Here are some of the artists whose shows really stood out for me.

Willy Mason, "Save Myself"
Willy is one of those "young man with an old soul" singer-songwriters, and a complete sweetheart to boot.

Ryan Auffenberg, "Missouri in the Morning"
This San Francisco singer-songwriter was the perfect opening act for Willy, as he also has an "old" voice. His backup band included members of the Court & Spark. Ryan is one of my favorite local acts to see live.

Magic Bullets, "Heatstroke"
Magic Bullets are a San Francisco band I wasn't familiar with before seeing them open for the French Kicks, and I'm so glad I caught them. Watch out for these boys!

French Kicks, "Also Ran"
I'd seen the French Kicks before, and was impressed by them, but their show on Thursday night floored me, it was so fantastic. They have such an amazing stage presence.

Love of Diagrams, "Pace or the Patience"
I didn't get to see this Australian band's actual set, but I saw them at soundcheck and they sounded great. I was really sorry to miss the actual show.

Oranger, "New Comes and Goes"
This San Francisco indie rock band has been around for a while, as evidenced by their incredibly tight live show.

Sebadoh, "God Told Me"
Sebadoh has reunited with their original lineup, and this show blew us all away, despite the fact that Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein were both really sick.

Loquat, "Take It Back"
Loquat played rightround's happy hour show and showed off some of their latest material. I'm looking forward to their new record twice as much now!

Dodo Bird, "Men"
Dodo Bird (a.k.a. the Dodos) were so good as our other happy hour band that I had people coming up to me for the next hour asking me "who was that amazing first band?" Their energy onstage is unparalleled.
