Elise Nordling and Rachel Frothingham's Noise Pop and SXSW Callouts

March 12 - March 18

A lot of the best bands that appeared at San Francisco's Noise Pop Festival are also playing SXSW, and we would highly recommend making an effort to catch them. We were even nice and listed dates, times, and venues they'll be playing in Austin this week!

Annuals, "Complete or Completing"
Annuals played a great show at Cafe du Nord, enchanting a sold-out hall of eager fans. Don't miss this crowd of passionate musicians at SXSW — I don't think they'll be playing small venues for long! – RF

SXSW: Wednesday, March 14, 12:45 a.m., Beauty Bar Patio (617 E. Seventh Street)

Annuals

from Be He Me (Ace Fu Records and Terpsikhore Inc)

The Changes, "Water of the Gods"
This band from Chicago rocked the Rickshaw Stop at Noise Pop 2007, soliciting reactions of "WHO is this band?" the entire time they played. They are playing several shows during SXSW — don't miss the Metro Party at Emo's on the 14th. – RF

SXSW: Saturday, March 17, 11:00 p.m., Habana Calle 6 Annex (708 E. Sixth Street)

The Changes

from Today is Tonight (Drama Club [US])

Midlake, "Roscoe"
I can't wait to see Midlake again; their well-beyond-sold-out set at Noise Pop's Sunday afternoon BBQ was mesmerizing. No one left, even though it was intensely crowded and crazy hot. – EN

SXSW: Saturday, March 17, 12:00 a.m., Buffalo Billiards (201 E. Sixth Street)

Midlake

from The Trials of Van Occupanther (Bella Union)

Snowden, "Victim Card"
Once again I actually had to miss Snowden, first at CMJ earlier this year and this time at Noise Pop. Grrr! I have been loving their album Anti-Anti, and will be sure to catch their show at SXSW. – RF

SXSW: Thursday, March 15, 10:00 p.m., Lambert's (401 W. Second Street)

Snowden

from Anti-Anti (Jade Tree)
Listen (preview via MySpace)

Ghostland Observatory, "Sad Sad City"
San Franciscans were lucky to have Ghostland Observatory play at Mezzanine during Noise Pop. They kept the audience on tenterhooks, saving "Silver City" to the absolute last moment. Catch them if you can. – RF

SXSW: Thursday, March 15, 12:00 a.m., La Zona Rosa (612 W. Fourth Street)

Ghostland Observatory

The Ponys, "Double Vision"
The Ponys played at the Bottom of the Hill to yet another sold-out crowd this year at Noise Pop. Don't miss their stripped-down, made-to-be-played-live show — they are all over SXSW this year, so you should have plenty of opportunities! – RF

SXSW: Thursday, March 15, 1:00 a.m., Emo's Jr (603 Red River Street)

Matt & Kim, "No More Long Years"
After every festival I walk away feeling very sorry I missed at least a few bands. At Noise Pop, one of them was Matt & Kim. I heard that their set was fun and energetic; hopefully it still will be in the Texas heat. – EN

SXSW: Thursday, March 15, 11:30 p.m., Beauty Bar Patio (617 E. Seventh Street)

Malajube, "Pâte Filo"
I missed Malajube's set (I had to be at another venue), but I heard from the crowd afterwards that it was brilliant — and they were so funny and nice, I'm going to go out of my way to catch them at SXSW. – EN

SXSW: Thursday, March 15, 12:00 a.m., Maggie Mae's Rooftop (323 E. Sixth Street)

Malajube

dios (malos), "You'll Get Yours"
dios (malos) is Beatlesesque in the best possible sense — they channel the loose vibe, the energy, and the musicianship of late-'60s pop psychedelia and still manage to sound fresh and unique. – RF

SXSW: Friday, March 16, 11:30 p.m., Red Eyed Fly (715 Red River Street)

dios (malos)

Minipop, "Generator"
Minipop puts on a gorgeous, engaging show every time I see them, including the sweaty, packed show they played at Noise Pop. They're just signing a record contract, so catch them now before they become huge. – EN

SXSW: Wednesday, March 14, 11:30 p.m., The Parish II (214 E. Sixth Street)

Minipop

from A New Hope (self-produced)
