Elise Nordling's top indie pop and indie rock picks
April 30 - May 13

Blonde Redhead, "23"
The new Blonde Redhead is a bit softer, a bit smoother, and a bit prettier than their previous amazing releases. Highly recommended.

Rumskib, "Springtime"
The most Cocteau-y, Slowdive-inspired, My Bloody Valentine-ish shoegazey pop I've heard in a long, long time. The guitar sounds alone will make you feel like it's 1991 all over again.

The Winston Jazz Routine, "A Ghost Beneath the Tower"
I'm not really clear why this band from Nashville calls itself the Winston Jazz Routine, when they're totally not jazz. At all. Instead, they're strange, yummy indie pop ambient twee stuff.

Dean & Britta, "Words You Used To Say"
These two ex-Luna-ites are continuing to make pretty mellow pop music, but this time around it's a bit more electronic.

Mus, "Una Sabana Al Viento"
I want to find the person who sent me the Mus promo package and thank them, because this stuff is so pretty and electronic-y and folky and wonderful. They're from Xixon, Spain (I can't even begin to imagine how to pronounce that), and definitely worth checking out.

Home Video, "Sleep Sweet"
Also from Brooklyn (why are all the bands from Brooklyn these days, anyway?), Home Video creates a lovely mash of electronic-indie-pop-rock that makes me all smiley. For fans of Postal Service, Radio Dept.

The Besnard Lakes, "And You Lied To Me"
Because it is impossible for there to be too many great bands from Montreal, here come the Besnard Lakes. They're more old-skool rock 'n roll than many of their city-mates, but they have that flair for dramatic songs that seems to go with living in Canada.

Chris Garneau, "We Don't Try"
This singer-songwriter from Brooklyn crafts sweet, soft almost-lullabies, with piano, strings, and whisper-like vocals.

The Frail, "Count on This"
Freshly signed to Tricycle Records and currently in the studio working on their first album, the Frail has already become an addiction for me, as I keep revisiting their MySpace page to listen again and again. For fans of Postal Service, Home Video.
