Elise Nordling's top indie pop and indie rock picks

May 14 - May 27

Great Lake Swimmers, "Your Rocky Spine"
You'd be more likely to guess that this Toronto-based band was from Kentucky than Canada after listening to their soft, country-style pop music. For fans of Iron & Wine, Calexico.

Softlightes, "The Microwave Song"
Pretty, sunny pop from Southern California, with a vocalist who sometimes sounds an awful lot like Benjamin Gibbard.

Softlightes

from Say No To Being Cool Say Yes To Being Happy (Modular)

Electrelane, "To The East"
Electrelane has always sounded a lot like Stereolab to me, but I've never thought that was a bad thing. Their new record is more of the same, and it's still yummy. They're currently on tour with the Arcade Fire – so make sure you get to the show early enough to catch them.

Electrelane

from No Shouts, No Calls (Too Pure / Beggars Group)

RJD2, "You Never Had It So Good"
I'm still not really sure what to make of RJD2. They blend, merge and dabble in many different musical genres, and then mix things together in interesting and surprising ways. Give them a listen, and let me know if you can say anything conclusive about what they sound like.

RJD2

from The Third Hand (XL Recordings)

Telograph, "Beneath Your Feet"
New Order meets Echo and the Bunnymen (and probably a little Oasis thrown in for good measure) in this band out of Washington, DC.

Telograph

from Little Bits of Plastic (self-produced)

Trembling Blue Stars, "This Once Was An Island"
Every time I think the Trembling Blue Stars is officially dead (just how many times have they broken up/reformed, anyway?), a new album comes out. Every one of them is fantastic, if you like songs sung by a man with a beautiful voice, to soft, lush pop music, about how he can't seem to keep a girlfriend.

Trembling Blue Stars

from The Last Holy Writer (Elefant)
Listen (preview via MySpace)

The Guest Bedroom, "Fake Flowers"
With female and male vocals intertwining over dischordant guitars, the Guest Bedroom is edgy enough to possibly make you think "punk." For fans of Les Savy Fav, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The Guest Bedroom

from Movement (self-produced)
